At some point in our lives, we all experience the emotion of anger.  The causes of anger vary from person to person.  For most of us, though, dealing with this feeling is not overwhelming.  Unfortunately, many people find that they are unable to address anger in a constructive manner.  If you find it difficult to handle your angry emotions, or if anger has led you to destructive acts, it may be time to consider an anger management program.

If you fail to properly control your anger, you may find that aspects of your physical and emotional health begin to deteriorate.  Your job, relationships, spirituality, and health can all be affected by an inability to cope with anger.  Thankfully, there are ways to overcome anger management problems.  The first step, though, is to understand your anger.  There are several self-tests you can use to assess what causes your specific anger response and how your body physically interprets anger.  Many of these are available online, or can be found in books on the topic.

Once you have a more thorough understanding of your specific anger management issue, you are better prepared to select a coping strategy.  One proven option is to develop relaxation strategies.  By coping with what stresses you, you are less likely to become aggravated.  Additionally, relaxation techniques can be implemented when you feel your anger level rising to help you control the situation.  Some techniques others have found useful are breathing exercises, such as breathing deeply through your stomach and focusing on each extended breath.   Other individuals have found repeating a calming word, or mantra, helps them find an emotional center when anger begins.  Taking a yoga class or participating in meditation are also good strategies to relieve stress.

If you find it difficult to conquer your anger problem individually, there are people out there who can help.  Psychologists specializing in anger management are a great resource.  They may be able to help you with a technique known as “cognitive restructuring.”  Through this, the patient learns to change his or her way of thinking about situations that cause anger.  Thus, ultimately, logic is used to conquer an anger problem.  Another interactive resource is an anger management support group.  There, you can learn what methods have helped or failed for others in your situation.

Ultimately, the key to anger management is a desire to change.  When you admit that anger is causing you a problem, and are ready to alter your mindset about this emotion, then you are ready to begin an anger management program.  The above ideas are just some options to get you started.  However, each individual must eventually find his or her own way of coping with anger.
